When you sweat, your skin becomes warmer, wetter and more exposed to whatever is in close contact with it. Research suggests that sweating can increase the absorption of certain chemicals associated with plastics through the skin.

What the studies show

Recent studies have raised concerns about the potential effects of PET micro- and nanoplastics on male reproductive health. In animal studies, exposure to PET has been associated with reduced sperm concentration, poorer sperm quality and lower testosterone levels. As for women, 2023 statistics show microplastics were detected in 76% of human placentas.

Most conventional polyester clothing is made from PET , a type of plastic that can shed tiny fibres through everyday wear and washing. Choosing cotton and hemp fight wear gives you an easy, simple way to reduce your direct contact with synthetic plastic fibres when training.

Why we do it

Fight wear should be designed around people, not profit margins. Polyester is cheap, durable and widely used in sportswear. But it is also a plastic fibre, and emerging research is investigating the potential effects of exposure to PET microplastics and associated chemicals on health. Instead we base our products in natural fibres like cotton and hemp. When something is worn against your skin the materials should be chosen with you in mind.
